We weigh real drop performance against the bulk it costs you, whether the camera lip is deep enough to keep the lenses off a table, whether the MagSafe ring is moulded in or stuck on, and what the case rules out — a folio kills wireless charging, a rugged case kills tight mounts. Yes, eventually. Clear polymers react to UV light and skin oils — that’s chemistry, not a manufacturing defect. Anti-yellowing coatings slow it down by months, not years. Budget on replacing a clear case roughly once a year.
If you use wireless charging, a magnetic car mount, or a MagSafe wallet or power bank, yes. A case without a proper moulded ring will either hold weakly or not at all. Stick-on metal plates work but sit unevenly.
Be honest about your history. If you’ve never cracked a screen, a thin case protects against the scratches you’ll actually get. If you’ve replaced a screen before, the extra bulk of a rugged case is cheaper than doing it again.
Phones spend most of their life face-up on tables, so the camera glass takes the abuse. Camera glass is more expensive to repair than the screen. A lip of at least 1mm keeps the lenses clear of a flat surface.
Folio wallet cases, no — the cover sits between the phone and the charger. MagSafe wallets that snap onto the back of a regular case are the compatible alternative.
