iPhone Duo Accessories: What to Know Before You Pre-Order

Apple's first foldable ships October 23 at $1,999. Amazon already has cases and screen protectors for it — and the single most important thing to understand is that none of them protects the screen you are worried about.

Tiny Tech Box Team · Updated Sep 10, 2026 · 11 min read

The iPhone Duo is the first foldable Apple has shipped: a 5.4-inch outer cover display and a 7.6-inch folding inner display, in Night Sky and Star White, from $1,999 and topping out at $3,199 for 2TB. Pre-orders open Thursday, October 16 at 5:00 a.m. PT and it ships October 23 — a full month after the rest of the lineup.

That month is useful, because the accessory rules for a foldable are genuinely different from the ones you know, and getting them wrong on a $1,999 phone is expensive. This guide is the explainer first and the shopping list second.

The thing that will cost people money

You cannot put tempered glass on the inner screen. Every product sold today as an "iPhone Duo screen protector" — including both on this page — is for the 5.4-inch outer display. The 7.6-inch inner panel is a flexible plastic-substrate display that bends; a rigid 9H sheet laid across it will crack or delaminate at the crease, and it will do so while taking the panel's own factory layer with it.

The short answer

If you are pre-ordering on October 16 and want to spend as little as possible while covering the real risks: FNTCASE Matte with Screen Protector at $22.49 gets you a case and outer-display glass in one box, designed against the same set of measurements. That is the whole practical requirement.

If the hinge is what worries you — and on this phone it should be — Mkeke Clear Full-Hinge Protection at $26.99 is the only case here that shrouds it. If you want a stand, FNTCASE 360-Spin at $29.99. If you want it to look good, Mkeke Techwoven at $32.99. For the outer display on its own, the JETech 3-pack at $12.99 is as good as the $16.99 Mkeke and cheaper.

And leave the inner screen alone until Apple or a serious brand ships a film made for it.

Why the inner screen is the whole problem

Apple’s pitch for the Duo is three words — foldable, posable, standable — and all three describe the hinge doing work. The demo showed a real two-pane iOS: a photo memory playing on the left half while the home screen sat on the right. That inner 7.6-inch panel is the largest display Apple has ever put in an iPhone, and it is the reason the phone costs $1,999.

It is also, physically, not the same kind of screen as the one on the front. A folding display uses a flexible substrate rather than rigid glass, with a soft protective layer laminated on top at the factory. Three consequences follow, and every one of them contradicts an instinct you have from slab phones:

Rigid glass cannot go on it. Tempered glass does not bend. Applied across a crease it either cracks at the fold within days or resists the fold hard enough to stress the hinge. Neither outcome is recoverable.

The factory layer is not removable. On a slab phone, the screen protector is the sacrificial part and you peel it off when it is scratched. On a folding panel the top layer is part of the display assembly. Peeling it — which people do, mistaking it for shipping film — damages the screen.

Aftermarket films exist but are a different product. Flexible TPU film can follow a crease, and third-party sellers do list them for foldables. We are not recommending one yet: the listings we found were created before Apple announced the Duo, under invented names, and cut to guessed dimensions. A film that is 2mm wide of a 7.6-inch panel is worse than no film, because you will peel it off and take something with it.

So the honest position for launch day is: protect the outer display with glass, protect the body and hinge with a case, and let the inner screen be a screen. Close the phone when it is in your pocket and it spends most of its life protected by its own hinge anyway — which is, in fairness, the design.

What the hinge does to case design

On a slab phone a case is one shell. On a foldable it is two shells and a decision about the spine, and that decision is the main thing separating the four cases here.

Two-piece shells — the FNTCASE cases and the Mkeke Techwoven — cover each half and leave the hinge exposed. The upside is that the hinge behaves exactly as Apple designed it: it holds any angle, it closes flush, and the “posable, standable” behaviour is unaffected. The downside is that the most expensive and most vulnerable component on the phone is the one part with nothing over it.

A hinge shroud — the Mkeke Clear — bridges the spine. It covers the mechanism against grit and against the kind of drop that lands on the fold, which is the drop that does structural rather than cosmetic damage. The trade is real, though: material across the spine can add resistance to holding a half-folded angle, and if the shroud is a millimetre too thick the phone does not close flush. That is a specification nobody can confirm from a listing photograph.

Our reading: the hinge shroud is the better idea in principle and the higher risk in practice. If you buy it, unfold and refold the phone the day it arrives, check that it closes with no gap, and use the return window if it does not.

MagSafe on a back that folds in half

A magnet array has to live on one half of a folding phone — there is no arrangement where a charging puck contacts both. FNTCASE claims 38 N52-grade magnets on its Duo cases, which is a statement about quantity rather than hold; like every brand in our iPhone 17 cases guide, none of these publishes magnet strength in any unit you could compare.

Two practical consequences. A magnetic wallet or grip sits on one half, so unfolding the phone puts it in a different place relative to your hand than you expect — worth thinking about before you buy a wallet case for this phone specifically. And a charging puck can only charge it folded, which is fine, but a magnetic stand holds only half the weight of an unfolded device and this is a heavy device unfolded.

None of these six is Qi2-certified, and as always that requirement belongs to your charger rather than your case.

How we picked

Two filters. First, the listing had to select a variant that names the iPhone Duo as Apple named it — which excluded a large set of foldable cases listed before September 9 under invented names like “18 Ultra,” “Phone Ultra Fold Duo” and “Phone Fold.” Second, every affiliate link was opened and confirmed to resolve to the stated ASIN.

FNTCASE MagSafe-Compatible Matte Case + Screen Protector — Best Starter Kit

iPhone Duo — outer shell · $22.49 · Amazon shows 4.4 from 33,579 pooled ratings · Tiny Tech Box Score: not rated yet

Case and outer-screen glass in one box with 38 N52 magnets, which is the cheapest way to cover both halves of the problem on day one. Matte finish, and the bundled protector means the magnets and the glass were at least designed against the same measurements.

Worth knowing. Buyer feedback on FNTCASE's folding-phone cases splits on durability and colour accuracy. A bundled protector is also take-it-or-leave-it: if you dislike it, you have bought a case and a spare.

Mkeke Clear Full-Hinge-Protection Case — Most Protection

iPhone Duo — full hinge shroud · $26.99 · Amazon shows 4.7 from 121,532 pooled ratings · Tiny Tech Box Score: not rated yet

The only case on this page that shrouds the hinge rather than leaving the spine bare. On a $1,999 phone whose most expensive component is the folding mechanism, that is the case design argument worth having — the hinge is where grit gets in and where a drop does structural rather than cosmetic damage.

Worth knowing. A hinge shroud is the one design here that can fight the hinge itself. More material across the spine means more resistance holding a half-folded angle, and a risk the phone does not close flush — check the fold the day it arrives.

FNTCASE 360-Spin Magnetic Stand Case — Black — Best Kickstand

iPhone Duo — outer shell · $29.99 · Amazon shows 4.9 · Tiny Tech Box Score: not rated yet

A 360-degree ring stand, an N52 magnet array, a bundled tempered-glass protector and claimed military-grade drop protection. A ring stand on a foldable is a slightly odd proposition given the hinge already stands the phone up — but the hinge only stands it up half-folded, and a ring stands it flat and unfolded.

Worth knowing. A ring on the back of a device that folds flat against itself is the design here most likely to interfere with closing. The listing is also under a month old.

Mkeke Techwoven Case — Green — Best Finish

iPhone Duo — outer shell · $32.99 · Amazon shows 4.6 from 446 pooled ratings · Tiny Tech Box Score: not rated yet

A woven-fabric back in green, which on a Night Sky or Star White Duo is the one pick here that looks like a deliberate choice rather than a protective necessity. Fabric also grips better than any matte plastic on this page — worth something on a device this large unfolded.

Worth knowing. The most expensive case on this page, and woven fabric stains where plastic wipes clean.

JETech 9H+ Front Screen Protector 3-Pack — Best Value

Duo OUTER 5.4" display only · $12.99 · Amazon shows 4.5 from 80,735 pooled ratings · Tiny Tech Box Score: not rated yet

Three sheets of tempered glass for the 5.4-inch outer cover display, with an installation tool. The outer screen is the one you use closed — checking notifications, tapping a card reader — so it collects the pocket grit and the face-down desk scratches. It is also the only Duo display that can take glass at all.

Worth knowing. Three sheets is generous, but tempered glass is the cheap part — the installation tool is what you are really paying for. Outer display only.

Mkeke Tempered-Glass Screen Protector 3-Pack — Alternative Glass

Duo OUTER 5.4" display only · $16.99 · Amazon shows 4.6 from 213,584 pooled ratings · Tiny Tech Box Score: not rated yet

The same job as the JETech at four dollars more, from a brand with a longer track record in alignment frames. If you have installed a Mkeke protector before and got on with the frame, this is the familiar one.

Worth knowing. Four dollars more than the JETech for the same job, and nothing on either listing separates the two. Outer display only.

Which one for which person

You are pre-ordering and want one boxFNTCASE Matte + Screen Protector ($22.49). Case and outer glass together, cheapest complete answer, and the two parts were at least designed against the same measurements.

The hinge is what you are worried aboutMkeke Clear Full-Hinge ($26.99). The only shroud here. Verify it closes flush on day one.

You will use it half-folded on a desk → a two-piece case, not a shroud. The hinge is the stand; do not put material across it. FNTCASE 360-Spin ($29.99) adds a ring for unfolded, flat viewing that the hinge cannot do.

You want it to look like a $1,999 phoneMkeke Techwoven ($32.99). Fabric grips better than plastic, which matters on something this large unfolded, and it stains, which matters over a year.

You only want the outer screen coveredJETech 3-pack ($12.99). Nothing separates it from the $16.99 Mkeke on paper.

You want to protect the inner screen → wait. There is no product we would put on it today.

What we left out

Every pre-announcement foldable case. AICase, SPIDERCASE, Temdan and Red2Fire all have live, in-stock foldable cases listed under names Apple never used — one AICase listing calls the same product “18 Duo Ultra,” “18 Ultra” and “iPhone Ultra foldable” in a single page. Those were cut to leaked dimensions. We will look again when the sellers update them against shipping hardware.

Flexible TPU inner-screen films. The right idea and the wrong moment. The listings we found were created before the announcement and are cut to guessed panel dimensions; a misaligned film on a folding display is worse than nothing.

Anything claiming to fit both the Duo and a slab iPhone. There is no such product, whatever the listing says.

Frequently asked

Can I put a screen protector on the iPhone Duo's inner folding screen?

Not a tempered-glass one — glass does not bend, and across a crease it will crack or stress the hinge. Flexible TPU film is the only format that can work, and we have not found one yet that we would trust to match the 7.6-inch panel, because every listing we checked was created before Apple announced the phone. The inner display also ships with a factory-applied protective layer that is part of the assembly and must not be peeled off.

So what do the "iPhone Duo screen protectors" on Amazon actually cover?

The 5.4-inch outer cover display — the one you use with the phone closed. That is a rigid screen and it takes tempered glass normally. Both protectors in this guide are for that display, and both listings are clear about it once you read past the title.

Should I buy a case that covers the hinge?

It protects the most expensive component against grit and against a drop on the spine, which is the strongest argument in favour. Against it: material across the hinge can fight the posing action Apple built the phone around, and can stop it closing flush. Buy one if hinge protection is your priority, and check the fold on day one.

When can I actually buy iPhone Duo accessories?

Now, but the phone does not arrive until October 23, so anything you buy today sits in a drawer for six weeks — often longer than the return window. If you want to hold a case against the phone before committing, order after pre-orders open on October 16 so the two arrive close together.

Do MagSafe chargers and wallets work with the iPhone Duo?

Magnetic accessories attach to one half of the folded phone and charge it folded, which works normally. What changes is that a wallet or grip ends up in a different position relative to your hand once the phone is unfolded, and a magnetic stand is holding half of a device that is heavy when open.
