iPhone Duo in Star White and Night Sky, open and closed

Best iPhone Duo deals: who takes the most off, and who delivers first

The biggest iPhone Duo discount right now is AT&T’s, at up to $1,200 off. But the biggest number isn’t the best deal for everyone. The right one depends on which carrier you’re on, whether you have a phone to trade in, and how long you’re willing to wait. Here’s the best deal for each kind of buyer, and how soon each store can actually get you a phone.

The best iPhone Duo deal for you

Up to $1,200

That’s the most you can take off an iPhone Duo today, from AT&T, with a trade-in worth $230 or more and its top unlimited plan. If you don’t want to trade in a phone, T-Mobile gives switchers $1,000 off with no trade-in. If you want the phone sooner, Xfinity Mobile and Best Buy are quoting early November, while Apple’s own store says January 25.

Best overall: AT&T, up to $1,200 off

AT&T has the biggest credit of any carrier, and it’s open to existing customers as well as new ones. To get the full $1,200 you need to:

  • Trade in a phone AT&T values at $230 or more. A trade-in worth $35 to $129 gets up to $350 instead.
  • Be on Premium 2.0 or higher, which starts at $100 a month for a single line before discounts. Some older unlimited plans qualify too. On Extra 2.0 the most you can get is $930.
  • Buy on a 36-month installment plan and pay a $35 activation or upgrade fee.

The credits start within three bills and run for the full 36 months. If you drop to a cheaper plan, the credits shrink or stop. If you leave AT&T, they stop and the rest of the phone is due.

Best for: anyone already on a top AT&T plan with a recent iPhone to trade in. They’re already paying for the plan, so the only real cost is the phone they hand over.

Best without a trade-in: T-Mobile, $1,000 off

T-Mobile will take $1,000 off the Duo with no trade-in at all if you switch to T-Mobile, bring your number and add a new line on its Experience Beyond plan. That means you keep your current phone to sell, hand down, or keep as a backup.

If you’d rather trade in, T-Mobile also offers up to $1,000 for a phone in any condition on Experience Beyond, so a cracked old iPhone still counts. Older models get $700 or $500. The credits run over 36 months, and paying the phone off early ends them.

The catch is timing. T-Mobile’s site is quoting a ship date of December 29 to January 6, the latest of any carrier.

Best for: switchers who can wait, and anyone who wants to sell their current phone themselves.

Best for Verizon customers: up to $840 off an upgrade

Verizon’s trade-in deal depends on your plan and whether you’re upgrading or adding a line:

  • Upgrading on Unlimited Ultimate (from $95 a month): up to $840 off.
  • Adding a new line on Unlimited Ultimate: up to $1,000 off.
  • Unlimited Plus: up to $660 on an upgrade, $840 on a new line.

How much you actually get also depends on which phone you trade in. Older models get half.

Verizon has two other offers worth knowing about. New customers can get the Duo on its Simplicity plan for $72 a month, phone and service together. That price is spread over 48 months rather than 36, so you’re committing for four years. And if you add a new line, you can get an Apple Watch Series 12 or an iPad included, with no trade-in.

Best for: existing Verizon customers on Unlimited Ultimate. Verizon is currently quoting December 4 delivery.

Fastest delivery: Xfinity Mobile and Best Buy

If you want a Duo before the holidays without lining up at an Apple Store, these are the two to check.

Xfinity Mobile was showing an estimated delivery of November 6, the earliest we found. It takes up to $1,000 off with a new Mobile Plus line and a trade-in, or $400 off over 36 months with no trade-in. Existing customers upgrading get up to $500, or up to $1,000 if they’re Xfinity Diamond members.

Best Buy shows November 10 for the 512GB Duo. It passes on the same carrier credits as AT&T and Verizon, but it only sells AT&T and Verizon models. There’s no unlocked option. Here’s what that means before you order.

Best for an unlocked phone: Apple

Apple doesn’t cut the price, but it’s the only store here that sells the Duo unlocked, so you can use any carrier and switch whenever you want. You have three ways to pay:

  • Pay in full: $1,999 for 256GB.
  • Apple Card Monthly Installments: $83.29 a month for 24 months at 0%. The phone is still unlocked.
  • Apple Trade In: $35 to $885 off, depending on your old phone. That’s less than the carriers offer, but there’s no plan to sign up for.

The problem is the wait. Apple’s store is quoting January 25 for every model. Your best bet with Apple is store pickup: slots open on October 24, and stores may have walk-in stock on launch day, October 23. Here’s how to line up.

Apple also sells the carrier deals above, so you can buy at Apple and still get AT&T’s, T-Mobile’s or Verizon’s credits.

Is a $1,200 deal really worth $1,200?

Not always. Bill credits are only worth it if you’d have paid for the plan anyway. Two things to work out before you choose:

The plan costs more than you think. $1,200 in credits works out to $33.33 a month over 36 months. If the plan you need costs $20 a month more than the one you have now, that’s $720 over three years, and your $1,200 deal is really worth $480.

  • You’re tied in for three years. The credits come monthly. Leave the carrier, pay the phone off early or drop to a cheaper plan, and they stop. Whatever is left on the phone is due.
  • Your trade-in has a value of its own. If you could sell your old iPhone for $500 yourself, a $1,000 trade-in deal only really saves you $500. A no-trade-in deal like T-Mobile’s lets you keep that $500 as well.
  • Carrier phones may be locked. A phone bought on a carrier deal is usually tied to that carrier until it’s paid off and the carrier’s unlocking rules are met.

Before you order

  • Check the delivery date in your cart. Dates on product pages and in search don’t always match the checkout.
  • Get your trade-in quote first. Every carrier pays less for older phones, and AT&T needs $230 or more for the top credit.
  • Read which plan the deal needs. Most of the biggest credits need the most expensive unlimited plan.
  • Keep any order you already have. If you pre-ordered from Apple for January, keep it until the new phone is in your hands, then cancel.

Cases and screen protectors

Whichever deal you take, it’s the same phone, so the same cases fit. Our iPhone Duo case and screen protector picks are all made for the Duo, and our iPhone Duo accessories guide covers chargers and the rest. If your phone won’t arrive until December or January, wait to order a case so you’re still inside the return window when it lands.
