The FRĒ is a two-piece sealed enclosure: the phone snaps between a front frame with a built-in screen film and a back shell, with gaskets and a sealed port cover completing the seal. Built correctly it is genuinely IP68. The build compromises show in two places: the screen film adds a layer between your finger and the display, and the back panel is a softer plastic that owners report scuffing sooner than a $100 case should.
You seat the phone and close the two halves, making sure the gasket is clean and seated — OtterBox recommends a water test before trusting it. Getting a reliable seal is more finicky than fitting a normal case, and a bad seat is the difference between waterproof and not. Removal is a two-piece pry.
For a waterproof case, performance is the seal, drops and everyday usability. The seal works when set correctly, and drop protection meets MIL-STD-810G. The everyday cost is audio: the sealed speaker and mic ports mean calls and media sound muffled, and this is the single most common complaint. Touch response through the screen film is fine but not as crisp as bare glass. MagSafe hold survives the enclosure.
