Apple’s September 9 event: everything announced

This is the answer to the question we opened the day with, and it needs one careful qualification.

The good news: a case built for the iPhone 17 Pro will physically fit the body of an iPhone 18 Pro. The shell, the button positions relative to the frame, the overall footprint — unchanged. That is unusually good news in a year when Apple added a mechanical aperture, a bigger vapour chamber and a larger battery. It also means screen protectors sized to the 17 Pro display are very likely to carry over.

The unresolved part: Apple does not publish camera housing dimensions, and never has. A phone can keep an identical body while the camera plateau grows — and the 18 Pro added six aperture blades, a rotor and a custom lens inside that module. So the cutout, not the case, is the remaining risk.

What we would actually do: if you own a 17 Pro case, keep it and try it on September 18 rather than replacing it now — worst case the cutout fouls and you have lost nothing. If you are buying new, wait for hands-on photos next week. The one thing not to do is bin a case that fits.

We will measure a 17 Pro case against a retail 18 Pro on the 18th and publish the result either way.

Now you can buy a charger, and here is the specific advice.

The headline 15-minute figure needs a 60W adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply — not merely a 60W brick. AVS is a specific USB PD capability, and plenty of high-wattage chargers do not have it. If the listing does not say Adjustable Voltage Supply, it will not hit Apple’s number no matter how many watts it claims. This is the detail the “compatible fast charger” listings will get wrong, exactly as we warned.

Wireless tops out at 25W on both MagSafe and Qi2. That matters: Qi2 at 25W means a good third-party Qi2 charger now matches MagSafe on speed, so you are paying for magnet quality and build, not for a wattage advantage. Do not pay a MagSafe premium expecting faster charging than Qi2 — on this phone there is none.

On cases: Apple publishes body dimensions but never camera housing dimensions, so the spec page cannot settle case fit on its own. We are verifying the 18 Pro measurements against Apple’s own iPhone 17 Pro figures rather than quoting them from memory, and its 17 Pro page has already been moved now the new models are up. We will publish the comparison once we have Apple’s numbers in front of us — we are not going to guess this one after telling you all morning not to.

This is the entry to act on, and it changes the answer we have been giving all morning — in your favour.

Your MagSafe accessories are not dead. The Duo takes MagSafe, which means existing MagSafe chargers, wallets, mounts and stands have a job on Apple’s folding phone. That was genuinely uncertain two hours ago, and it was the single biggest open risk for anyone with a drawer full of magnetic accessories. Apple simply chose not to mention it on stage.

On the adapter, buy for 60W, not 40W. Apple’s quoted charge times come from a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter rated to 60W maximum, and the page asks for 60W-capable cables and USB PD adapters. A cheap 20W brick will charge a Duo, but it will not reproduce the numbers Apple advertises, and neither will a 60W charger paired with a cable that cannot carry it. The cable matters as much as the brick — that is the mistake people make.

We are still chasing the iPhone 18 Pro’s figures and the camera housing dimensions, and will post those next.

Our advice at the end of the keynote is the same as it was at the start, and we are glad we did not move off it: buy no accessories today.

Preorders for the phones are not until Saturday, and the Duo is six weeks out. Apple’s tech-spec pages go up within the hour and will answer the wattage and the housing dimensions. Anything being sold right now as “iPhone 18 Pro compatible” was designed against leaked measurements — and today already showed those leaks were wrong about the Duo’s screen sizes.

The date is the story here, not the price — $1,999 lands roughly where reporting expected, but almost nobody flagged that the Duo would ship on a separate calendar.

What that means practically: you have six weeks, and you should use them. By October 23 there will be real teardowns, real hinge testing and real cases on the market. Nobody buying a Duo needs to gamble on a launch-day accessory, and given this is Apple’s first folding phone, the case for letting other people find the failure modes first has rarely been stronger.

It also means the accessory market will be thin at launch and stay thin. Third-party makers tool up against sales volume, and a $1,999 first-generation foldable in two colours is not a volume product. Expect Apple’s own Folio and two-part case to be most of what exists in October, priced accordingly.

One more consequence: the Duo and the 18 Pro are now two separate buying events. If you want both a phone this month and a Duo in October, you are making two orders, six weeks apart, with two different sets of accessories — none of which are interchangeable.

This confirms what we suspected two hours ago, and it is worth being straight about the implication rather than just reporting the product.

A case “in two separate parts, one per half” means the hinge is not covered. That is not Apple being lazy — there is no way to armour a hinge that has to fold — but it does mean the most mechanically complex and expensive part of a $2,000-class phone has no protection from a case, Apple’s or anyone’s. Any third-party listing promising “full hinge protection” for a Duo is describing something physically impossible.

The Folio with a kickstand is the more interesting product, and slightly odd: the Duo already stands up by itself. A folio earns its place by covering the outer display in a pocket and adding grip to a mirror-polished titanium frame — not by propping the phone up, which it does unaided.

Prices for both are still unstated, as is the Duo’s own price.

IP68 on a folding phone is the genuinely surprising number here, and it kills a product category before it exists. Do not buy a waterproof pouch or a rugged waterproof case for this phone. Foldables have historically been the phones that could not be sealed, which is why dry bags sold well alongside them; an IP68 rating from day one makes that spend pointless.

Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display carries over the same advice we gave for the Watch: skip the outer screen protector. Apple has put its toughest glass on the surface you touch most.

The inner display is still the unanswered risk, and none of this durability talk covered it. Ribs, ceramic inserts and IP68 protect the chassis — they say nothing about the folding panel, which on every foldable to date is the part that fails. Watch that space rather than the outside of the phone.

Two colours also means the case market here will be small and slow. Nobody tools up for a niche colour split on a first-generation product.

Apple Pencil on an iPhone is the accessory headline of this entire keynote, and it is the first time it has ever been true.

It also means the Duo is the first iPhone with a genuine accessory requirement rather than a set of optional add-ons — and Apple has not said which Pencil, which matters enormously. Pencil Pro, USB-C and 2nd-gen differ in how they attach and charge, and a foldable has nowhere obvious to magnetically dock a pencil along its edge. Anyone who owns a Pencil already needs that answer before assuming theirs works.

Note also that it is coming later this year, not at launch. So the one accessory this phone most clearly wants is not ready on day one.

On the 5.4in outer screen: at 90% of an 18 Pro’s area, folded-state screen protectors are a real product here rather than an afterthought. The inner display is plastic-topped on every foldable made so far and must never be given a stick-on protector — if that holds true here, it is the single most expensive mistake a new Duo owner can make. We will confirm the inner display material as soon as Apple publishes it.

Start from the honest position: nothing you own fits this phone. Not a case, not a screen protector, not a wallet, not a car mount sized for a slab. A foldable is a new form factor, and the entire accessory market for it starts from zero today.

The phrase to hold onto is “the two sides connect into a continuous frame”. A continuous frame across the hinge is the hard engineering problem in a foldable, and it is also the thing that determines whether a case can grip the phone at all — most foldable cases are two shells that leave the hinge naked, which is exactly where the phone is most fragile.

The question we care about most is still unanswered: where does MagSafe go on a phone that folds? Magnets need a flat, consistent backing, and on a foldable half the back becomes the inside. If Apple has kept MagSafe here, every existing charger, wallet and mount potentially still has a job. If it has not, this is a phone with no accessory ecosystem at launch. We will have the answer shortly, and we will say plainly which it is.

The 60% figure settles the screen protector question we raised two entries ago. Do not buy a Watch screen protector for a Series 12. Apple has moved Ceramic Shield onto the aluminium models and quantified the improvement; a stick-on protector adds little to that and brings its own failure mode at the curved edge. Spend on a bumper that protects the case edges instead.

The Hermès titanium band is worth naming for what it signals rather than what it costs: Apple is still building new bands on the same connector, which is the strongest evidence yet that your existing bands carry over to Series 12 and Ultra 4.

And note the date split again. The Watches and the $149 AirPods can be ordered today; the iPhones cannot until Saturday. If you were planning one order, you are making two.

Three of these change what you should buy, and one of them may save you money.

Ceramic Shield 2 is the screen protector question. Apple has now put its toughest cover material on the Watch front. Watch screen protectors have always been a marginal product — fiddly to apply, prone to lifting at the curved edge — and a second-generation Ceramic Shield weakens the case for one further. Our read: skip the protector, spend it on a bumper case that guards the edges, which is where Watch glass actually dies.

The ceramic case option cuts the other way. Ceramic resists scratches far better than aluminium, but it is more brittle under a sharp impact against a door frame. If you buy the ceramic model, a bumper matters more, not less.

Faster charging plus 24-hour battery changes the charger. Twenty-four hours means charging daily rather than topping up, and “faster charging” only happens on a puck that supports it — an old slow puck will bottleneck a phone Apple designed around a quick daily top-up. Combined with the AirPods case that now accepts a Watch puck, a single fast 3-in-1 stand is looking like the one accessory this keynote genuinely justifies.

Apple has not stated the charging wattage for the Watch either. Same rule as the phone: wait for the spec page.

For a Watch launch there is exactly one accessory question that matters, and it is not the sensors: do your bands still fit?

Apple has kept its band connector compatible across every Series generation so far, which is why a band bought in 2015 still works today — and it is the main reason people stay on Apple Watch. But a genuinely new sensing system means new hardware on the underside of the case, and case dimensions have changed before between sizes even when the connector did not.

Apple has not said either way. Until it does, the safe read is that bands almost certainly carry over and cases and screen protectors almost certainly do not, because those are cut to exact case dimensions. We will confirm both as soon as the sizes are published.

The charging case is the detail to notice, and it is genuinely useful rather than a spec-sheet line. A case that accepts an Apple Watch puck and Qi means the AirPods stop needing their own dedicated cable — if you already travel with a Watch charger, that is one fewer thing in the bag.

It also changes what a multi-device charging stand is worth to you. The 3-in-1 stands that put a Watch puck and a Qi pad on the same base now cover three Apple devices instead of two, which makes them a better buy than they were yesterday. That is the first accessory recommendation today that does not depend on a dimension Apple has yet to publish.

Note the split on dates: this model is orderable today, while the iPhones wait until Saturday.

Keeping the open-ear fit is the decision that matters for what you buy alongside them. No silicone tips means no ear-tip ecosystem — no foam replacements, no third-party tip packs, none of the aftermarket that surrounds AirPods Pro. If you have been waiting to buy tips for the base AirPods, you can stop; that market does not exist for this model by design.

What does apply: the charging case is the accessory that fails first on every AirPods generation, so a case cover earns its money here more than tips ever would. And the new wrist strap Apple showed works with AirPods Pro, not these.

Two things follow from this, and the second one saves you money.

First: the base 18 Pro starts at 256GB. That removes the storage upsell that usually costs people $100 for no reason — at 256GB most people genuinely do not need to go up a tier.

Second, and more useful: you have until Saturday. Preorders do not open until September 12 and phones do not arrive until the 18th. Apple’s spec pages will be live long before then with the camera housing dimensions and the charging wattage — the two numbers that decide whether your existing cases and chargers carry over.

There is no reason to buy a single accessory today. Anything sold in the next 48 hours as “iPhone 18 Pro compatible” is being sold against a guess, and you can simply wait for the facts and buy on Saturday with the same delivery date.

Apple’s own upgraded clear case is also worth noting against what we said earlier: on the two light finishes, a clear case is the one that shows the colour-matched aluminium — and Apple upgrading its own suggests it knows yellowing was the complaint.

The crossbody and wrist straps are the tell. Apple only builds strap attachment into its own cases, so a strap ecosystem means the case has anchor points — and third-party case makers will spend the next six months copying whatever that attachment standard turns out to be.

The practical advice for today: if you want a strap, the first-party case is the safe buy, because a third-party case bought now may not have the mounting points the straps need. That is the opposite of our usual advice, and it is worth saying plainly rather than defaulting to “buy the cheaper one”.

Prices for these accessories have not been stated yet.

This is the one to watch for case fit, and we are not going to pretend to know yet.

A variable aperture is a physical mechanism — moving blades inside the lens stack. Mechanisms take depth and width. If that module grew, the camera cutout on every iPhone 17 Pro case is wrong, and “fits 18 Pro” listings that went up before today were written against leaked dimensions rather than Apple’s.

What we know: the module changed internally. What we do not know: whether the external housing footprint moved. Apple has not put those dimensions on screen, and the keynote may never show them. They will appear on the tech-specs page, and we will measure against last year’s and post the answer here — as a yes or a no, not a maybe.

This is the entry to act on, and the honest read is: buy nothing yet.

“50% in 15 minutes” is a result, not a spec. It is produced with a specific adapter at a specific wattage, and Apple has not named either. Every year a wave of “compatible fast charger” listings goes up within hours of the keynote, priced against a wattage nobody outside Apple has confirmed. Last year plenty of them were wrong.

Wait for the wattage on Apple’s spec page — usually live within the hour — before you buy an adapter. And note what the battery numbers mean for the rest of your kit: at 45 hours, the Pro Max genuinely does not need a power bank for a normal day, and that is the accessory most people over-buy.

A denser process usually buys efficiency, and Apple is spending it on runtime rather than thinness this year. If that holds up in testing, the honest advice is that a 10,000mAh power bank is overkill for most people on this phone — a 5,000mAh MagSafe pack that keeps the phone pocketable is the better buy. We will not know until the battery figures are published; we will update this entry when they are.

Colour-matched aluminium and glass is a cosmetic change, not a fit change — on its own it tells you nothing about whether your current case works. The number that matters, the camera housing footprint, has not been shown yet. Until Apple publishes the dimensions on its spec pages, treat every “fits the 18 Pro” claim from a case maker as a guess, including the ones already taking preorders.
