iPhone 18 Pro Max weight: 249 g, and what to do about it
The iPhone 18 Pro Max weighs 249 grams — 16 more than the 17 Pro Max, in a body that is exactly the same size. It is the heaviest non-folding iPhone Apple has ever made. Here is where those grams went, what they feel like after a day, and how much your case is adding on top.

How much does the iPhone 18 Pro Max weigh?
249 g / 8.78 oz
That is 16 grams heavier than the iPhone 17 Pro Max (233 g), and it makes the 18 Pro Max the heaviest non-folding iPhone Apple has ever shipped. The dimensions did not change at all — 163.4 × 78 × 8.75 mm, identical to last year.
| Model | Weight | vs 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | 249 g | — |
| iPhone Duo (foldable) | 254 g | +5 g |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | 233 g | −16 g |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | 227 g | −22 g |
| iPhone 15 Pro Max | 221 g | −28 g |
| iPhone 18 Pro (6.3″) | 211 g | −38 g |
Only the folding iPhone Duo is heavier, and it is a fundamentally different object. Among slab phones this is the top of the chart.
Where the 16 grams went
None of it is padding. Four changes account for essentially all of it:
- A much bigger battery. Teardowns put the US eSIM-only 18 Pro Max at 5,567 mAh, against 5,088 mAh in the 17 Pro Max — about 9.4% more cell. Models with a physical SIM tray come in at 5,391 mAh. This is the single largest contributor.
- A second-generation vapour chamber with three times the surface area of last year’s. It is what lets the phone hold peak speed through a long export instead of throttling, and Apple credits it with up to a 40% gain in sustained performance.
- The A20 Pro package, which places the silicon die alongside memory in custom packaging.
- Apple’s own C2 modem, replacing the C1X.
Put plainly: you are carrying the battery life and the cooling. That is a defensible trade, and it is also why there is no lighter configuration to buy your way into.
What 249 grams actually feels like
Side by side with a 17 Pro Max, plenty of people at launch could not reliably pick which was which. Sixteen grams is roughly three US quarters. Held alone for an evening, though, most people do notice — it shows up as wrist fatigue reading in bed, not as a shock when you pick it up.
The reaction online has been sharper than the reviews. PhoneArena called the weight the one flaw in an otherwise excellent phone, and a widely shared joke from the leaker Ice Universe suggested Apple should ship the phone with a wrist-tendonitis policy. If you already found the 17 Pro Max borderline, this is the year the Pro Max stops being a comfortable one-handed phone.

The number that actually matters: phone plus case
Almost nobody carries a bare phone. Your real in-pocket weight is 249 g plus whatever you wrap it in, and case weight varies far more than people expect — a rugged stand case can add more than a quarter of the phone’s own mass.
These are typical ranges by case type rather than measurements of specific products, but they are close enough to plan with:
| Case type | Case weight | Total in hand | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra-thin shell (0.3–1 mm, no magnets) | 10–20 g | ~259–269 g | Lightest real option. Minimal drop protection. |
| Thin MagSafe (aramid / slim PC) | 20–30 g | ~269–279 g | The sweet spot for most people. |
| Silicone or woven, MagSafe | 30–45 g | ~279–294 g | Grippy, which offsets some of the fatigue. |
| Hybrid / clear MagSafe | 40–67 g | ~289–316 g | Magnet arrays are heavier than people assume. |
| Rugged or 360° stand case | 60–85 g | ~309–334 g | You will feel this one. Buy it for a reason. |
Going from a rugged stand case to a thin MagSafe shell saves you more weight than Apple added this generation — roughly 40–55 g against 16 g. Your case choice matters about three times more than the phone’s own weight increase.
Two ways to deal with it
1. Remove weight — go thin
A 15–25 g shell keeps you close to bare-phone feel and still covers the corners and the camera plateau, which is where aluminium bruises. The trade-off is real: thin cases do not survive a bad drop onto concrete the way a rugged case does, and they do not raise a lip above the screen. If you are going caseless today because of the weight, a thin shell is a strictly better position than nothing.
One thing to check before you buy: the 18 Pro Max camera plateau sits about 0.5 mm taller than the 17 Pro Max’s. Thin cases with a tight moulded lip around the module are the ones most likely to fight it.
2. Redistribute it — stop holding the phone
This is the underrated answer, and it is what most weight complaints are really asking for. Fatigue comes from sustained grip, not from mass in your pocket. A built-in kickstand or a magnetic ring grip means the phone rests on a surface or hangs off a finger instead of being clamped in your palm for an hour.
A 360° stand case adds 60–80 g on paper and still feels less tiring than a 25 g thin case, because you stop supporting the phone at all while you watch or read. If you are scrolling in bed or watching on a tray table, redistributing beats removing.

The cases that add the least

TORRAS Magnetic Slim Fit is the pick for most people: matte hard Bayer PC, 6.9″ OriginFit, and the best combination here of genuinely thin and genuinely reviewed at 4.6/5 across 16,720 ratings. Buyers call it smooth, non-slip and easy to hold, which is the quality that matters most at 249 g. Worth knowing: the anti-yellowing claim gets mixed feedback, with some owners reporting yellowing over time.
JETech Magnetic Slim at $14.99 is the budget route, and one buyer says it looks like the phone has no case at all. The honest caveat is grip: reviews split, and several people call it very slippery. On the heaviest iPhone ever made, a slippery case is a real trade-off, not a footnote.
pitaka’s 600D aramid is the one that genuinely fixes the weight — aramid is the lightest case material you can buy, and owners describe it as making you forget the case is there. It does not protect the screen edge, and plenty of reviewers think $59.99 is too much. BENKS ArmorAir is the same idea in Kevlar for about ten dollars less, but its 4.9 rests on only 24 ratings from a listing that is new this month — treat that score as provisional rather than proven.

TORRAS Q3 Air 360 Magnetic Stand Case (iPhone 18 Pro Max)
Prices and availability are accurate as of the date shown and are subject to change. The price and availability displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
Both are heavier on paper and less tiring in practice, because the built-in ring takes the phone out of your hand entirely. The Ostand Hue is the lighter of the two; the Q3 Air adds real drop protection for people who want both and will accept the weight. Our favourite stand case for the 18 Pro Max overall is the TORRAS O3 Air Gradient.
One we dropped
We looked at the ESR Classic Hybrid Clear — ultra-thin, anti-yellowing, and a 4.6/5 average across more than 29,000 ratings. It is not on this list because Amazon flags the listing as a frequently returned item and will not generate an affiliate link for it at all. A rating that high next to a return-rate warning usually means the average is carrying a lot of older variants. We would rather say that than take the commission.
Should you buy the iPhone 18 Pro instead?
If weight is your deciding factor, this is the real answer: the iPhone 18 Pro is 211 g, 38 grams lighter, and you give up screen size and about nine hours of rated video playback. You keep the A20 Pro, the variable-aperture camera and the same cooling system — the Pro is not a cut-down phone this year.
Thirty-eight grams is a far bigger difference than anything a case will win back. Anyone who found the 17 Pro Max heavy should hold an 18 Pro before ordering the Max.
Common questions
How much does the iPhone 18 Pro Max weigh?
249 grams, or 8.78 ounces. That is 16 grams heavier than the iPhone 17 Pro Max at 233 g, making it the heaviest non-folding iPhone Apple has released.
Why is the iPhone 18 Pro Max heavier than the 17 Pro Max?
Mostly the battery — 5,567 mAh in the US eSIM model against 5,088 mAh last year. The rest comes from a vapour chamber with three times the surface area, the A20 Pro’s packaging, and Apple’s C2 modem.
Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max too heavy for one-handed use?
For most people it is usable but tiring over long sessions. Sixteen grams is about three US quarters. If you already found the 17 Pro Max borderline, look at the 18 Pro at 211 g instead.
Did the iPhone 18 Pro Max get bigger as well as heavier?
No. It is 163.4 × 78 × 8.75 mm, identical to the 17 Pro Max down to the fraction of a millimetre. All the change is in mass, which is also why your old case still fits — see our full case-fit breakdown.
How much weight does a case add?
Between about 10 g for an ultra-thin shell and 85 g for a rugged 360° stand case. That spread is several times larger than the 16 g Apple added, so your case choice affects in-hand weight far more than the generation change does.
Does the colour affect the weight?
No. Black, silver, glacier and burgundy are all 249 g.
