Aulumu G09 Magnetic Ring Grip Review: Beautiful, Divisive, Expensive

3.7 · Would Buy
TINY TECH BOX SCORE

Of all the grips on this list, the Aulumu G09 is the best made. Aerospace-grade aluminium, a clean finish, and a dual-axis ball joint that beats a hinge when you want an exact angle.

It’s also $45.98, and going by owner reports, it divides people on the one thing a grip has to get right: how firmly it actually holds on to the back of your phone.

One-sentence verdict: Buy it if you want a nice-looking metal grip with a flexible ball-joint stand and you’ll pay a premium for design and materials; skip it if you need the strongest possible magnetic hold, an easy one-handed action, or you’d balk at $45.98 for a grip.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • ✓A well-made object: aerospace-grade anodised aluminium, tight tolerances, and a design owners call outstanding.
  • ✓The dual-axis ball joint gives you any viewing angle you like, not just a few fixed stand positions.
  • ✓It works with other MagSafe accessories and comes with plates for non-magnetic phones.
  • ✓Slim and light for a metal grip, with an anti-slip base.
Cons
  • ✗The magnetic hold divides owners. Aulumu cites about 20 N, but a fair number say it’s weak, or that the ball joint is stiff to pivot.
  • ✗At $45.98, it costs far more than a good plastic grip ring, and opinions on value split.
  • ✗Ease of use is mixed: some find the ball joint intuitive, others find it awkward one-handed.
  • ✗On a non-magnetic case, it’s a stick-on accessory, and fiddly to move once it’s placed.

The review

Design and build quality

By a clear margin, this is the nicest-made grip in the group. The aluminium is aerospace grade, the anodised finish is clean, and the dual-axis ball joint lets you set any angle you like instead of clicking through presets. It’s slim and light for something metal.

The Halbach magnet array is the interesting bit of engineering. In practice, owner reports on hold strength are split right down the middle.

Setup and ease of use

Snap it onto a MagSafe phone or a case with a magnet ring, or, if your phone or case has no magnets at all, stick one of the bundled metal plates onto the back first, so the magnet has something to grab on to. Then use the ball joint to set your grip or viewing angle. The dual-axis movement takes a little getting used to.

Performance

Adjustability is its strength, since a ball joint is more flexible than a hinge, but hold and ease of use are the weak points. Some owners get a firm, smooth experience; others find the magnet light or the joint stiff. That’s the story.

Durability and warranty

The aluminium body and the anodising hold up well. The ball joint is what wears, and Aulumu rates it for about 25,000 cycles. There’s a limited warranty through Aulumu’s support channel.

Price and value

At $45.98 on Amazon, it’s priced as a design object. The materials and machining justify some of that, while the mixed feedback on the magnet and on ease of use undercuts the rest.

If you want the look and the flexible ball joint, and you’re buying it partly as an object, the price is defensible. If you just want a grip and stand that works, a TORRAS 360 ring ($26.99) does the same jobs with a more consistent magnet. We’d call it a fair buy under about $35.

The TORRAS 360 ring ($26.99) does the grip-and-stand job for less, with a more consistent magnetic hold. Pick the Aulumu if the ball joint and the materials matter to you.

Who should buy it?

Buy it if
  • ✓You want the best-made metal grip and a flexible ball-joint stand.
  • ✓You’d rather set any viewing angle than pick from fixed presets.
  • ✓You’re buying it partly as a design object, and the price doesn’t put you off.
Skip it if
  • ✗You need a strong, consistent magnetic hold above all.
  • ✗You want a simple one-handed grip and a fixed kickstand.
  • ✗You don’t want to spend $45.98 on a grip ring.

Final verdict

Beautifully made. Aerospace-grade aluminium, a clean finish, and a dual-axis ball joint that beats a hinge for setting exactly the angle you want. If you’re buying it partly for the object itself, it delivers.

On function, the feedback is split. Aulumu’s 20 N Halbach magnet claim doesn’t translate into a consistent experience, because some owners find the hold firm and the joint smooth while others find it light or stiff, and at $45.98, far more than a good plastic ring, that inconsistency is hard to ignore. A 3.9-star average fits a product people admire and argue about. For dependable function, the cheaper TORRAS 360 is the safer buy.
