AirPods Pro 3 Review: Apple's Best Earbuds, With One Fit Caveat

4.2 · Would Buy
TINY TECH BOX SCORE

These are Apple’s do-everything earbuds. AirPods Pro 3 have the strongest noise cancelling in the lineup, the longest battery, hearing-health features and a heart-rate sensor that turns them into a workout tracker, and a year after launch they’re still the AirPods to beat.

There’s one thing to know first. The redesigned ear tip suits some ears better than ever, and others noticeably worse.

One-sentence verdict: The best all-round AirPods, with class-leading noise cancelling, 8 hours per charge and accurate workout heart rate; try every tip size before you decide, because the firmer new tips divide people.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • ✓Apple’s strongest noise cancelling. The sealed fit blocks the low rumble of engines and trains that open AirPods can’t.
  • ✓Up to 8 hours per charge with ANC on, and 24 hours with the case.
  • ✓Workout heart rate that DC Rainmaker found matched chest straps closely in his testing.
  • ✓Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection features, where they’re available.
  • ✓Five tip sizes, XXS to L, and the case charges on MagSafe, Qi, an Apple Watch charger or USB-C.
Cons
  • ✗The new foam-infused tips are firmer. Some people get a better fit than with Pro 2, while others report soreness or buds slipping out.
  • ✗Heart rate only works inside Apple Fitness and Health, so it won’t show up on Garmin watches or gym equipment.
  • ✗No charging cable in the box.
  • ✗Amazon feedback is mixed on comfort, value and long-term battery.

The review

Design and build quality

The buds are a little slimmer in the stem and fuller in the body than AirPods Pro 2, at 5.55 g each. The tip is the real change.

Apple now embeds a thin layer of foam inside the silicone, and the tips come in five sizes, with XXS added. They’re firmer than the old ones. For ears that suit them, the seal is tighter and the buds stay put better, and DC Rainmaker found retention noticeably improved on runs. For other ears, they press harder: some long-term owners in MacRumors’ review report soreness within 15 to 30 minutes, and Amazon buyers are split on fit and comfort.

IP57 means sweat, rain and an accidental dunk aren’t a problem, and the case itself adds a speaker, a lanyard loop and Apple’s Ultra Wideband chip, so Find My can guide you to it precisely when it slips down the back of a sofa.

Setup and ease of use

Open the case next to an iPhone, tap Connect, and you’re done.

iOS then walks you through the Ear Tip Fit Test. Run it. Getting the size right matters more here than on any AirPods before. Press the stem to play and pause, press and hold to switch modes, and swipe for volume. The Hearing Test takes about five minutes in the Settings app and tunes the buds to your hearing.

Heart rate needs no setup at all. Start a workout in the Fitness app on your iPhone and the buds feed it, with the data going to Apple Health and your Activity rings.

Performance

This is the best noise cancelling Apple makes. Because the tips seal your ear canal, the Pro 3 handle exactly the low-frequency rumble that open AirPods 5 can’t: jet engines, train wheels, a bus idling at the stop. Owners who’ve compared them directly with Pro 2 describe the step up as noticeable, if not dramatic, and firmware updates since launch have improved it further. Sound is full and balanced, and with a good seal, the bass lands properly.

The battery is a real improvement, with Apple rating it at 8 hours with ANC, up from 6 on the Pro 2, or 6.5 hours if you leave heart-rate sensing switched on for the whole day. That’s a full workday. Or most of a transatlantic flight.

The heart-rate sensor is the surprise, and it’s a pleasant one: DC Rainmaker tested it against chest straps and watches through steady runs, intervals and indoor cycling, and found it tracked closely throughout, which makes it good enough to leave your Apple Watch at home for a run. The limit? Software. It doesn’t broadcast over the standard Bluetooth heart-rate profile, so Garmin, Peloton and other third-party gear can’t read it.

A small number of owners report a faint static hiss with ANC on and nothing playing, or a whine on flights. Apple has replaced affected units under warranty.

Durability and warranty

AirPods Pro 3 have been on sale since September 2025, so there’s a year of ownership history behind them now. The IP57 rating and Apple’s build quality hold up well, and most complaints are about fit, not failure.

Some owners report buds that stop holding a charge or fail within months. Not a widespread defect, though. Like all AirPods, the batteries can’t be replaced by the user, so expect capacity to fade over a few years. Apple’s warranty is one year, and at this price AppleCare+ is worth considering.

Price and value

At Apple’s full list price, AirPods Pro 3 are a premium buy, and they justify it if you’ll use the noise cancelling, the battery and the fitness features. On Amazon they’re $199.00 right now. When they’re discounted, the gap to AirPods 5 with the Wireless Charging Case gets small, and that’s when the Pro 3 become the obvious pick: far stronger noise cancelling, three extra hours per charge, and heart rate.

Budget for a USB-C cable if you don’t have one already, and for Apple’s replacement tips if none of the included sizes work for you.

Have in-ear tips never worked for you? Then AirPods 5 with the Wireless Charging Case are the better choice. Plenty of people find them more comfortable, but you give up a lot of noise cancelling and battery life. For anyone who flies, commutes or trains, AirPods Pro 3 are worth the step up, especially on a discount.

Who should buy it?

Buy it if
  • ✓You travel or commute and want to block out engine and train noise.
  • ✓You want one pair for work, flights and workouts.
  • ✓You’d use heart rate in Apple Fitness, or the hearing features.
  • ✓AirPods Pro 1 or 2 fit you well, or open AirPods never stayed in.
Skip it if
  • ✗In-ear tips always feel uncomfortable to you.
  • ✗You need heart rate on a Garmin, Peloton or other non-Apple device.
  • ✗You’re on Android and won’t use Apple’s features.
  • ✗You only listen in quiet rooms. AirPods 5 cost less and skip the tips.

Final verdict: are AirPods Pro 3 worth it?

Can you wear in-ear tips? Then these are the best AirPods. The noise cancelling, 8-hour battery and accurate heart rate make them a true all-rounder, and the hearing features add real long-term value. On sale, they’re the pair we’d tell anyone who travels to buy over AirPods 5.

The one real caveat is the tip. Run Apple’s Ear Tip Fit Test, try every size including XXS, and wear them for half an hour before you decide. If none of them work, return them while you still can, because no list of features makes up for earbuds that hurt.

Frequently asked questions

No. Apple redesigned the tips for the Pro 3 and sells Pro 3-specific replacements, and Pro 2 tips aren’t listed as compatible.

No. Apple sells the USB-C cable separately, though any USB-C cable you already own will work.

In DC Rainmaker’s testing against chest straps and watches, it tracked closely through runs, intervals and indoor cycling. It only works with Apple Fitness and Health, though, not Garmin or Peloton.

They include Apple’s Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, where Apple has made them available. Availability varies by country, and you’ll need a compatible iPhone and up-to-date software.

Run the Ear Tip Fit Test in Settings and try every size, including XXS. The new tips are firmer, so the size that worked on your Pro 2 may not be right this time. If nothing seals, return them within the window.

Buy a cover made for the Pro 3. Case makers like Spigen and ESR list the Pro 3 as a separate size from the Pro 2.
