Apple AirPods Pro 3
Home / Reviews / Headphones / AirPods 5
AirPods 5 keep the open, tip-free shape that made regular AirPods popular, and both models now come with noise cancelling as standard. On AirPods 4, you had to pay extra for the ANC version to get it, but now it’s built into the cheapest model in the range. Big change.
So they’re good. The real questions are whether that single fixed shape happens to suit your particular ears, since there’s nothing you can swap or adjust if it doesn’t, and which of the two cases is worth buying.

One-sentence verdict: The best open-ear AirPods Apple has made, and the wireless-case model is the one to buy; noise cancelling really helps, but it can’t match a sealed fit, and five hours per charge is short.

Nearly the same look as AirPods 4. At 4.3 g per bud, they nearly disappear once they’re in.
The difference you can feel is on the wireless model’s stem. A force sensor now handles volume with a swipe, which fixes the most irritating thing about earlier AirPods, where turning it down meant reaching for your phone or saying “Hey Siri” out loud on the bus.
Fit is both the point and the gamble. With no seal, there’s no blocked-ear pressure, and you can wear them for a long stretch without feeling shut off from the room. But comfort comes down to the shape of your ear, not a tip size. Some ears hold them perfectly. In others, the plastic housing starts to rub after half an hour; SoundGuys’ reviewer hit exactly that at around the 30-minute mark, while Cult of Mac’s stayed comfortable through long sessions and bike rides.
On an iPhone, setup is one tap. Open the case near the phone, confirm, and the buds then move between your Apple devices on the same Apple Account.
Press the stem to play, pause and answer calls, press and hold to switch between noise cancelling and Transparency, and on the wireless model, swipe up or down the stem for volume.
Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Personalized Spatial Audio are all here and work without any fiddling. Both models support Live Translation, but it depends on your iPhone, software version, region and language, so if that’s the reason you’re buying, check your language pair first.
Noise cancelling is the headline. It’s real. Apple says AirPods 5 remove up to 50% more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, and SoundGuys measured an average 59% drop in perceived noise, the best result they’ve recorded for an open-ear pair. It’s strongest in the mids and highs: office chatter, air conditioning, the hiss of a laptop fan. Below about 500 Hz, it struggles, so engine drone, bus rumble and train noise come through. That’s physics, because without a seal, open earbuds can’t block low frequencies the way AirPods Pro 3 can.
Better sound, too. There’s more bass and more detail than on older open AirPods, though the bass depends entirely on fit, and if they sit even slightly loose in your ear, the low end thins out fast. Transparency is excellent and natural, and calls come through clearly in normal conditions, with wind as the microphones’ weak spot.
Battery is the letdown. Apple rates the wireless model at up to 5 hours with ANC (7 with it off) and 22 hours with the case, and the USB-C model at 4 and 20. Five minutes in the case gets you about an hour. That’s fine for a workday in short bursts, but not for a long-haul flight.

Not compatible:
IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance is a real upgrade from IP54, but it still isn’t a swimming rating. The shell and case carry over from AirPods 4, which have a solid track record.
The usual AirPods caveat applies: you can’t replace the batteries, so capacity will fade over the years, as it has on every pair before them. Apple’s standard one-year warranty covers defects, with AppleCare+ as an option. And since AirPods 5 only went on sale on September 18, 2026, nobody has a long-term ownership record yet.
Apple’s list price for the wireless-case model is lower than AirPods 4 with ANC cost at launch, and it cancels more noise. On Amazon, it’s $149.00 right now, which is a strong deal. The standard model is the cheapest way into noise-cancelling AirPods, but the small step up to the wireless case buys an extra hour per charge, wireless charging, a speaker for finding a lost case and volume swipe. Over a few years of ownership, that’s easily worth it.
Need the strongest noise cancelling? AirPods Pro 3 are the better buy, especially on sale.

| Product | Best for | Key advantage | Main drawback | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple AirPods 5 (this review) | People who find silicone ear tips uncomfortable but want noise cancelling for the office, home and errands | Noise cancelling that actually works for an open design. It’s strongest against steady sounds like air conditioning and fans | One shape with nothing to adjust. If it doesn’t suit your ears, there’s no fix | $149.00 |
| Apple AirPods 5 (USB-C Charging Case) | Lowest price, cable charging only | Same earbuds and ANC for $20 less | No wireless charging, no case speaker, no volume swipe, 4 hours with ANC | $129.00 |
| Apple AirPods Pro 3 | Travel, commutes, workouts | Sealed tips block far more noise; 8 hours with ANC; heart rate | In-ear tips aren’t for everyone; costs more at list price | $199.00 |
If ear tips bother you, the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case is the right pick, full stop. Only choose the standard model if you always charge by cable and every dollar counts. Fly a lot, commute on loud transit or train hard? Then AirPods Pro 3 are the better buy, particularly when they’re discounted.
These are the easiest AirPods to recommend in years. Noise cancelling is standard, it works far better on an open design than it ever has, and the price is lower than AirPods 4 with ANC was. Get the Wireless Charging Case model, because the extra money pays for itself in convenience.
Fit. That’s the reservation. With no tips to swap, one pair can be perfect for one person and sore for the next, and a loose fit costs you bass and noise cancelling too. If you can, wear a pair for half an hour before you commit, and keep the receipt.

For most people, yes. It adds an hour of listening with ANC on, charging on Qi, MagSafe and Apple Watch chargers, a speaker that helps Find My locate the case, and swipe volume on the stems. Buy the standard model only if you always charge by cable.
Yes. ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness are on both. The earbuds are the same; only the case and the volume swipe differ.
No. AirPods Pro 3 seal your ear canal with silicone tips, so they block far more, especially low engine and train rumble. AirPods 5 are at their best in offices, homes and cafés.
Apple lists the same case dimensions for both (46.2 × 50.1 × 21.2 mm), and case makers like elago and ESR sell one cover for both. On the standard model, a magnetic cover won’t add wireless charging.
They’re rated IP57 for dust, sweat and water resistance, which covers rain and workouts. They aren’t designed for swimming or showering.
Yes, as Bluetooth earbuds with noise cancelling. Apple’s one-tap setup, automatic device switching, Find My and most customisation need an Apple device.
