iPhone Duo first week: what real owners say about cracked screens and unready software

The iPhone Duo reached its first buyers on Friday, October 23. A few days later, two complaints are drowning out everything else. Some owners say the inner screen cracked along the fold within hours or days, and many more say the software isn’t ready for a folding iPhone. Here’s what real owners are reporting, what Apple has said, and what to do if you have one.

The first week in one line

Great hinge, rough start

Most owners love how the Duo feels to open and use. But a small number of inner screens are cracking at the fold, which Apple has now confirmed, and a lot of popular apps still don’t fit the big screen. If your Duo is working, keep an eye on the inner screen while you can still return it.

Complaint 1: the inner screen is cracking

Within a day of launch, owners started posting photos on Reddit and X of inner screens with damage along the fold. Bloomberg reported that some screens cracked after just hours or days of normal use. The reports look strikingly alike:

  • A crack or bright line near the fold. Most photos show a vertical crack close to the hinge, or a band of white pixels starting near the middle of the fold.
  • A crunch before it happens. Some owners say they heard a crunching sound, or felt something in the hinge, as they opened the phone. One Reddit owner said the crack appeared about six hours later.
  • Dead pixels and display glitches. Others describe dead pixels or lines across the right side of the screen.

Here is one of the first reports, from an owner on the r/iPhoneDuo subreddit:

Because the damage starts in the same spot on so many phones, Yahoo Tech reports it doesn’t look like user error. iFixit’s early theory, after its teardown, is that the support bar under the fold may not drop low enough when the phone opens, which would put extra stress on one point of the screen. iFixit calls that a hypothesis, not a confirmed cause.

What Apple says

Apple told Bloomberg it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,” and that affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple says most Duos aren’t affected, and it hasn’t said how many are. It is reportedly sending damaged phones to its engineers in California to find the cause. Apple hasn’t said what causes the cracks or whether a fix is coming.

The good news: according to 9to5Mac, you don’t need AppleCare+ to get a replacement for this problem, and that includes phones bought from a carrier. MacRumors reports some owners have been given a new phone in store on the spot.

There is one catch. Stock is tight, so some owners are being asked to wait, and one US owner said on X that T-Mobile told them it couldn’t replace any parts for the Duo until January. Go to Apple directly, not your carrier. And be a little careful with photos you see online: 9to5Mac says a handful of the crack “reports” going around are fake, AI-generated images. With 28 more countries getting the Duo on October 30, IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo says Apple needs to make its warranty position clear quickly.

Complaint 2: the software isn’t ready

This is the complaint you’ll hear most, because it affects almost every owner. The Duo runs iOS 27.1, a version made just for it, and Apple’s own apps look great on the 7.6-inch screen. Contacts and the App Store, for example, split into two panes like an iPad. The problem is everyone else’s apps.

What Apple promised: two apps side by side on the inner screen. Apps that haven’t been updated don’t look like this yet. Image: Apple Newsroom.
  • Black bars everywhere. Apps that haven’t been updated show up as a phone-sized window in the middle of the screen, or with a big black bar down one side. Engadget named Telegram. Forbes saw it in WhatsApp and Gmail. Macworld added Ring, Google News, Hulu, Disney+, Uber and many car and insurance apps, and called the situation “the Wild West.”
  • Apps that break. Macworld found the Kindle app “flat-out busted” in reading mode and had to close the phone to escape it. Reviewers have also reported Split View breaking when the phone rotates, and apps getting the camera the wrong way round.
  • Slower unlocking. The Duo has Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID. Owners say it’s awkward in some of the ways you hold a folding phone, and Macworld wants a way to skip the “Rest to Open” step.
  • A small outside screen. The 5.4-inch cover screen is the smallest iPhone screen in years, and many apps aren’t laid out for its shape.

Here’s what that looks like on our own Duo. Both screenshots are from the inner screen:

So is it fair to say Apple didn’t care? Partly. Apple says more than 50 third-party apps are already optimized for the Duo or soon will be, and some big ones, like Spotify, Slack and Yelp, already fill the screen properly according to Macworld. But for $1,999, a lot of owners expected the apps they use every day to work on day one, and many don’t. Apps only fit the new screen once their developers update them, so this will get better app by app over the coming weeks. Some of the bugs need fixes from Apple, too.

What owners do like

It isn’t all bad news. The same owners and reviewers keep praising the same things:

  • The hinge feel. It’s smooth and holds its position half-open, so the Duo stands up on a desk for video calls or StandBy.
  • The matte inner screen. It cuts glare and hides the crease when you look at it straight on.
  • Battery life. Engadget often finished the day with 40 percent or more left.
  • Typing on the outside. The wider cover screen gives you a roomier keyboard than an iPhone 18 Pro Max, says Macworld.

Already have one? Do this now

Check your inner screen every day while you can still return it. Apple’s standard return window is 14 days. Look for a thin line or bright stripe near the fold, and listen for any crunching when you open it.

  • If you see damage, stop folding it. Contact Apple Support or book a Genius Bar appointment, and mention Apple’s statement about the inner display. Keep your receipt and take photos.
  • Think about AppleCare+. Without it, Apple charges $999 to replace the inner screen. With it, the fee is $99. You can normally add AppleCare+ within 60 days of buying the phone.
  • Leave the inner screen’s top layer on. It looks like a film, but it’s part of the display. Apple charges $49 to replace it, and you should never put glass on the inner screen.
  • Use a case that covers the hinge. A case won’t stop a factory fault, but it protects against the drops and knocks that aren’t covered for free. Our case picks are below.
  • Put glass on the outer screen only. Our guide to protecting the iPhone Duo’s crease and screens explains what’s safe.
  • Update your apps. Developers are sending Duo updates every day. Check the App Store’s Updates list before you decide an app is broken.

The iPhone Duo cases and accessories we’d get

None of these will stop a factory fault in the hinge. What a good case does is take the knocks and drops that Apple won’t fix for free, and a glass protector keeps the outer screen safe. These are the ones we’d start with.

Apple iPhone Duo Case and Folio

If you want the safest fit, start with Apple’s own. The iPhone Duo Case is a thin, two-part matte polycarbonate case that wraps both halves of the phone, in sand or navy blue. It adds almost no bulk to a phone that’s already heavy. The trade-off is that it leaves the titanium hinge exposed.

The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is Apple’s other option, in taupe or navy blue. Its built-in kickstand folds away flat, which helps if you watch videos on the big screen. You can buy both from Apple.

TORRAS makes three Duo cases, all built around its Ostand ring stand, and all sold on the TORRAS store rather than Amazon:

  • Ostand Q3 Rugged. The toughest of the three. It has a 360° spinning stand for landscape or portrait, an air-cushioned TPU frame, raised edges around the screen and camera, and strong N52 magnets for MagSafe chargers and mounts. Ocean Blue, Sandstone Grey or Carbon Black.
  • Ostand Q3 Spin. The everyday version, with the same spinning stand and a tempered-glass protector for the outer screen in the box. Deep Blue, Black or Purple.
  • Ostand Q3 VegSkin. A softer, leather-like finish with a built-in kickstand and MagSafe magnets, if you want something that feels less like a rugged case.

On Amazon: cases and outer-screen glass

If you’d rather order from Amazon, these are the Duo cases and screen protectors we’ve picked so far. The Mkeke Clear case and the Temdan Ultra Fold both cover the hinge, and the TORRAS OrigArmor is an anti-glare protector for the outer screen.

Still waiting for yours?

If your Duo hasn’t arrived, you don’t need to cancel. Apple says most units are fine, and you have 14 days to return it. When it arrives, open it slowly, look closely at the fold, and set up your accessories before you take it out. The iPhone Duo reviews roundup has what the critics thought before launch.
