A short grey pigtail with a Lightning plug, a small inline DAC, and a 3.5mm socket. The Lightning end seats with a positive click and the housing is more robust than Apple’s. It is a well-made small object — when the electronics inside cooperate.
Plug it into the Lightning port, plug your headphones into the 3.5mm end. iOS recognises it immediately because it is MFi certified.
For a headphone adapter, performance is sound quality, connection stability, mic support and build. Sound quality is good and, for most owners, a match for Apple’s. Mic and remote controls work. The failure mode is connection stability: static, intermittent audio and one-channel dropouts show up in enough reviews to be a known pattern rather than isolated bad luck.
