Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter Review: The Default Brick, Done Right

4.6 · Hell Yeah
TINY TECH BOX SCORE

The Apple 20W USB-C adapter is the brick most iPhones are designed around. It delivers a clean 20W, runs cool, and its compact body doesn’t block the second outlet on a wall plate. There’s one port and no cable in the box.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • It is the genuine article — the exact adapter Apple designs iPhone charging around, so speeds and safety behaviour are predictable.
  • Compact enough to leave two outlets usable on a duplex socket.
  • Runs cool under load; owners consistently note no overheating.
  • It is only $15, and it carries Apple’s warranty.
Cons
  • One port only — you cannot charge a phone and AirPods together.
  • No cable in the box.
  • 20W is enough for phones and pucks but not for iPads Pro at full speed or any laptop.
  • A small share of owners report units failing within a couple of months.

The review

Design and build quality

It is a small white cube with a single USB-C port and fixed prongs. There is nothing to evaluate about the design beyond ‘it is small and it does not block the second outlet’, which is exactly what you want. Build quality is solid, and the well-documented tendency of cheap bricks to run hot is not an issue here.

Setup and ease of use

Plug it in, plug a USB-C cable into it, charge. That is the entire experience.

Performance

For a wall charger, performance is wattage, charge time, heat and multi-device behaviour. It delivers a clean 20W over USB-PD, charges a modern iPhone to roughly half in half an hour, runs cool, and unlocks 15W on Apple’s MagSafe puck. The only limitation is that it is a single port, so there is no multi-device behaviour to speak of.

Durability and warranty

The overwhelming majority of these last for years. A small number of owners report early failure, which is worth noting but is a low rate against nearly 13,000 reviews. Apple’s one-year limited warranty covers replacement.

Price and value

At $14.99 on Amazon (checked August 26, 2026), a genuine Apple 20W adapter is priced in line with good third-party bricks, and cheaper than it used to be.

For a single-device iPhone charger there is little reason to buy anything else — you get guaranteed behaviour and a warranty for the same money as a no-name brick. If you want to charge two devices or a laptop, buy a multi-port GaN charger instead. We would call this a clear buy at or below $15, which is its normal price.

If you need to charge more than one device from a wall outlet, a multi-port GaN charger is the better buy. For a single iPhone, this is the default and there is little reason to look elsewhere. Prices are Amazon figures from August 26, 2026.

Who should buy it?

Buy it if
  • You want a reliable, genuine 20W brick for an iPhone or a MagSafe puck.
  • You want it small enough to leave the second outlet free.
  • You value a warranty and predictable behaviour over saving a dollar or two.
Skip it if
  • You need to charge two devices at once.
  • You want to fast-charge an iPad Pro or a laptop.
  • You need a cable included in the box.

Final verdict

The Apple 20W USB-C adapter is the brick most iPhones are designed around, and it does that job without drama: a clean 20W, a compact body that does not block the second outlet, cool running under load, and a warranty. Its 4.8-star average across nearly 13,000 buyers is about as strong a track record as a charger gets.

Its limits are simply what it is: one port, no cable, and not enough power for a laptop or a full-speed iPad Pro. Within its lane — charging a single iPhone, AirPods or a MagSafe puck — there is no real reason to buy anything else.

No. It is the adapter only. You supply a USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to Lightning cable.

To roughly 50% in 30 minutes on a current iPhone, and it enables 15W on Apple’s MagSafe Charger.

No. It has a single USB-C port. For two devices, get a multi-port charger.

No. 20W is enough for phones and pucks, not for an iPad Pro at full speed or any laptop.

A good USB-PD 20W brick works too, but the genuine Apple one costs the same $15 and adds a warranty and predictable behaviour.

For a single iPhone, yes — it is the default, and there is little reason to look elsewhere.
