November 6
Pre-orders opened today, October 28, and the new iPad mini, MacBook Pros and iMac all reach customers and Apple Stores on Friday, November 6.
The big one: a MacBook Pro you can touch
After years of saying no, Apple has put a touchscreen on a Mac. The new MacBook Pro uses what Apple calls a PROLED XDR display, a tandem OLED panel with the touch sensor built right into the screen. Apple’s hardware chief Johny Srouji calls it “the world’s best laptop display.”
- Display: 14.2 or 16.3 inches, up to 2,000 nits of brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and ProMotion from 10Hz to 120Hz. A nano-texture glass option cuts reflections.
- Touch: existing apps work with touch on day one, because macOS turns taps into clicks. A redesigned hinge keeps the screen steady when you press it.
- No more notch: the camera now sits in a Dynamic Island, like the iPhone’s, which shows Live Activities, Spotlight and Siri.
- Chips: M5 Pro or M5 Max, up to 128GB of memory and up to 16TB of storage.
- Battery: up to 24 hours, according to Apple, and a 50% charge in about 30 minutes.
- Ports: three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SD card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack, plus Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

It isn’t cheap. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899 with M5 Pro and the 16-inch at $3,399. MacRumors says that’s about $400 more than a comparable mini-LED MacBook Pro, and a fully loaded model reaches $14,549. The 14-inch weighs 3 pounds and the 16-inch 4 pounds.

14-inch MacBook Pro with M6
If you don’t need touch, the regular 14-inch MacBook Pro moves to Apple’s new M6 chip and still starts at $1,999, now with 1TB of storage. The M6 has a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, and MacRumors expects graphics up to 30% faster than the M5. It also gets Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and supports two external 4K displays at up to 165Hz.

iMac with M6
The 24-inch iMac keeps its look and its seven colors (blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver) but gets the M6 chip. Apple promises up to 2x faster graphics and up to 5x faster on-device AI than the M4 model. It starts at $1,499 with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage, and adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and faster storage. A power adapter with a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port is a $30 option on the base model.

iPad mini: OLED and water resistance
Apple calls this the iPad mini’s biggest update ever, announced on Monday. It gets a slightly larger 8.5-inch OLED screen, the new A20 Pro chip and, for the first time on an iPad mini, IP67 water and dust resistance. It starts at $699 in Midnight or Starlight.
- Thinner and lighter: 5.4mm thick and 0.56 pounds for the Wi-Fi model.
- Better calls: the 12MP Center Stage front camera now sits on the long edge for landscape video calls.
- Faster wireless: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and Apple’s own C2 modem on cellular models.
- No ProMotion: the screen still runs at 60Hz, according to MacRumors.

What to buy with them
A few accessory notes before you check out:
- Get a 35W charger for the iPad mini. It reaches 50% in 30 minutes, but only with a 35W or stronger USB-C adapter. The 20W charger in the box is slower.
- Your old iPad mini case won’t fit. The screen and body changed size. Apple’s new Smart Folio uses its TechWoven fabric and costs $79.
- Screen protectors for the new MacBook Pro need care. It’s a touchscreen with an anti-reflective coating, so wait for protectors made for this exact model rather than using an older MacBook film.
- Travelling? Apple’s World Travel Adapter Kit is back at $39, now with AC Connector 2 plugs that fit the redesigned 70W and 140W Mac chargers.

Should you pre-order?
Our quick take: the touchscreen MacBook Pro is the most interesting Mac in years, but first-generation hardware at $2,899 and up is worth waiting a week of reviews for. The M6 MacBook Pro and iMac are safe, steady upgrades. The iPad mini is the easiest yes here: OLED, water resistance and a faster chip for $699.
